Dead console triage: no lights, no picture, no boot
This flow separates outside problems, such as power, cables and accessories, from real board faults, so you know when to stop.
Open the interactive checklist Tick off each step as you go. It saves in your browser.
Diagnosis · Easy · about 45 minutes. Worth doing. Reports say this fix helps on many machines.
You are in the right place if: You press power and nothing happens, or the console starts and then dies.
Before you start
- Do not open power supplies that carry mains voltage unless you are trained.
- Do not guess at parts.
- Remove accessories before judging a console faulty.

Step by step
- Check the outlet and strip Plug something else into the same socket.
- Swap the adapter Use a known-good adapter with the same specs.
- Remove all accessories Unplug controllers, memory cards, expansion add-ons and any Sega CD or 32X.
- Try a known-good cart or disc A bad game can look like a dead console.
- Try a known-good video setup Another cable and another TV.
- Check the power switch Switches wear and corrode.
- Look for a blown fuse Fuses such as F301 on a Mega-CD 2 or PS604 on a PS1 can kill a console.
- Inspect visually Open the console, look for burned parts, crusty residue and cracked joints.
- Stop and decide If nothing external explains it, decide whether to continue to board-level work or find a repairer.
Tips, tales and maybes
Found in write-ups and forum threads. These are other people's reports, not tested by us.
- Story (Low confidence). An N64 with a wireless controller adapter crackled and shut off. Using normal controllers cured it and suggested the console could not cope with the adapter's draw. Source
- Story (Medium confidence). A Mega-CD 2 with no signs of life only needed its F301 fuse. Source
- Tip (Low confidence). A Saturn black-screen thread listed power supply, video cable type and BIOS or memory cart interference as the first things to rule out. Source
