Disc will not read: disc, lens, mechanism or laser?
A stepwise flow so you do not replace a laser that was fine. Cheap steps first, laser last.

Optical · Careful · about 60 minutes. Worth doing. Reports say this fix helps on many machines.
You are in the right place if: The console spins the disc, hunts, then gives up or reports an error.
Before you start

Step by step
- Test with a known-good original disc Burned and scratched discs confuse diagnosis.
- Listen and watch Does it spin, does the laser move, does the tray work? Different symptoms point to different faults.
- Clean the lens Isopropyl alcohol on a cotton swab.
- Check mechanical parts Look for dry lubricant, a warped belt or a broken gear.
- Lubricate and replace belts Replace stiff belts and lightly lubricate.
- Look at the drive board Capacitors on the drive PCB are often the cause. hitmanmcc notes it is usually the caps, not the laser.
- Consider the motor Check whether the spindle motor spins and measure it if you can.
- Tune the laser pot last Mark the position, change in tiny steps and revert if you hear rubbing.
- Replace the laser If all else fails, replace it. Optical drive emulators are a common alternative.
